Day 121 – May 1

Today’s Readings:

1 Samuel 19-20
Luke 21:20-38
Psalm 119:49-72

“Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.”  – Luke 21:36

In our day to day activities, it often may seem that our lives  repeat themselves, as though walking on a giant hamster wheel. We move through the day, and at times feel we are repeating the same actions, going to the same places, and progress towards our goals can seem caught in this perpetual cycle.

Yet, as we journey with Jesus to Jerusalem in the gospel of Luke, we are reminded that our lives too have a goal, a destination if you will – Heaven, where we will have our encounter with Jesus Christ.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus stresses the need to be watchful. As Christians, we must not get comfortable in our daily routine, but always walk through our day with our gaze fixed on the eternal. In doing so, we will not be caught unaware on the day of Jesus’ coming again.

How can we be ready? Stay close to the Lord by carving out regular times of prayer. Live according to God’s word. Ask pardon often in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Be strengthened in the Eucharist. Pray for others. Reflect on Heaven and the Saints. These things help keep us from getting off track on our journey.

May God bless you.
