“Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins” – Matthew 26:27-28
“This night all of you will have your faith in me shaken” – Matthew 26:31
“My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch with me.” – Matthew 26:38
“So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” – Matthew 26:40-41
All these words were spoken by Jesus in the last 24 hours of his life. All his focus was on preparing the disciples as he made his way to the Cross:
- He leaves the lasting memorial of the Eucharist;
- He warns them that their faith is not certain, and they are not immune to falling and failure;
- He shares his agony with his disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane; and
- He encourages the disciples to be awake and to pray for strength to avoid temptation.
Even in his last hours, His focus was on others, with every action and word encouraging, preparing, and giving of himself for others. He was focused on His Mission.
How are you called to give of yourself for others? Can you pray with Jesus, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.”?
Let us ask our Lord Jesus to help us to faithful, especially when we feel the burden of discipleship leads us where we would not go on our own.
May God bless you!
