““He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” – Matthew 22:32
The Sadducees attempt to trap Jesus with a question about the resurrection, only to have Jesus obliterate their argument with one clean stroke. The Sadducees believe that nowhere in the Pentateuch is there any mention of the resurrection (the Sadducees only held firmly to the first five books of the Bible).
So Jesus simply took from the Pentateuch in his response to them:
“I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”
In this one quotation, Jesus confounds the sadducees, for God cannot be the God of dead people but of the living! Therefore Abraham, Isaac and Jacob must be alive!
We can hope that the sadducees had their hearts opened by Jesus that day. May we ask Him to open our hearts too.
May God bless you!
