Day 31 – January 31

Today’s Readings:

Exodus 19-20
Matthew 20:17-34
Psalm 31

“Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink? They answered, “We are able.”

Going toward Jerusalem, Jesus foretells his suffering, death and resurrection. Not long afterward, James and John come to him with their mother asking a special request to sit at his right and left in his kingdom.

Can they drink the cup? Do they even know what Jesus is asking them?

While they were jockeying for position among the disciples, Jesus was preparing to ’empty himself,’ to be one who ‘came not to be served but to serve and to give his life in ransom for many.

What a challenge Jesus puts before us! To bear in the forefront of our mind what it means to be a follower; we are not to be concerned with jockeying for position or power, but rather to service, becoming least in the kingdom of God.

May God bless you!
